This morning I started with the goal of 1 hour of blog researching so that I can figure out what kind of blog will go along with my book on how to draw linear perspective. (I know it's shocking, but endlessly blogging about drawing linear perspective doesn't excite me in the slightest.)
I started with this article of 49 Creative Geniuses Who Use Blogging to Promote Their Art (Hey look, it's Austin Kleon at #2!)
I clicked on #4, Amy Ng, honestly, because she kind of looks like me! Haha!
Her latest post was about her being mentioned in a TED Talk about "Why Some of Us Don't Have One True Calling." Obviously, I had to watch:
If you don't have time to watch the video, it's about how some of us aren't built to pursue just one thing because we love too many things and love to learn new things. Instead of a weakness, should be seen as a strength because "Multipotentialites" (aka Jacks-of-all-trades) have traits that make them creative problem solvers, innovators, rapid learners and very adaptable which is a highly sought quality.
I could have sworn the speaker was telling the story of my life. I even made websites during my high school years too! On dial-up internet!
Leads me to believe my business blog will likely not be a single themed thing. More likely a handful of topics that are important to me, with my product related posts being the most featured or highlighted.
While glancing at Austin Kleon's blog, I saw a list from his journal:
Tomorrow's 1 hour work goal is to list 10 things that excite me and 10 things that drain me. With the remaining time, I'll brainstorm 30+ blog post topics/article titles of the things that excite me. Hoping that it will reveal which topics I'm most passionate about to give my business blog some direction and focus.
Thanks Betsy. You have us up and running.
ReplyDeleteI like the links you have in your post and your funny comments. Nice.
Austin Kleon I find is very good at making things simple. "Do more of this", "Do less of this". *insert lightbulb moment* There are a lot of things in life that seem to be what I should do, not really what I want to do, but perhaps it's time to reevaluate why I do the things I do.
ReplyDeleteI just got into work this morning. I'll put on the TED Talk and give it a listen!
Betsy, the 49 bloggers link is filled with amazing inspiration.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I particularly like that post because of the sheer variety of creative trades listed, as well as seeing how many artists aren't at what I would consider an exceptional level of skill, but they are successful at what they do because they have built their tribe.
