Not a very productive day

I've had one of  T H O S E  days.

I did things today -- plenty of things -- but not the kind of things which will get me somewhere. I didn't make progress with the logo design. I don't know. I let myself go unproductive at times.

I was thrown off stride late yesterday when I was asked to do a few things this weekend to which I just can't say, "No way." It's like I was taken in another direction entirely.

It really shouldn't pull on me so hard.

I wonder why I let things rattle me so easily.

FOCUS.  FOCUS.  FOCUS.

  1. What a coincidence, I just listed "not being able to say no" as one of the things that drains my energy too!

Tomorrow is looking like a pretty busy day for me in the worst way-- running around both Lodi and Stockton to do errands that have nothing to do with anything that I want to be doing.

Even when I did have time today, I avoided working on my book like it was the plague.

Perhaps we need some plans and goal setting in place to help us stay on target.

  2. Betsy, you have amazing talent and the heart of a teacher. You're PERFECT for today's internet economy. But, Seth Godin advises being "out there" with your passion for a couple of years before things start to happen. Your book should be out there. Can you post what you have of the book on this blog in little bites?

    In my case...

If I had been at work and the boss was expecting another logo design from me, it would've happened. Whether I was pleased with my work or not -- it would've happened. And, I would STILL HAVE MANAGED the weekend commitments. Instead, am I pouting and rebelling?

Is that it? Hhhmmm...? I wonder why I allowed yesterday to be such a waste of time.

Concrete goals and accountability are fine with me.

  3. Originally, the book itself was going to be the method of being "out there," because (as you may have noticed) I use MANY copyrighted and licensed images for the examples. I can't sell it without all kinds of lawsuit consequences coming my way.

Hoping that by giving it away for free, I can avoid lawsuits under the "Fair Use" law. With the free book and blog out there that's bringing in my tribe and followers, I was going to create more micro-subject specific books (that have only my art examples in it) for sale.

However, as I am now procrastinating and fighting against producing the art in this free book (which was originally scheduled to be finished last MARCH), I'm getting anxious that writing books long term will always be this long war with myself to get it done. I have another idea tickling away at my brain, but it's so large scale, I'm afraid I'd be biting off more than I can chew. (Which I frequently do. Originally, my book was going to feature step-by-step processes of 27 illustrations. I've since cut it down to 6 and am still procrastinating.)

Mentioned to Vicki in an email today that I would really like to meet up some time over a big pot of tea with 90 minutes or so, to bounce around ideas as well as get the concrete goals and accountability that you mentioned in place.
